Which Types of Jewelry Are Worth The Most During Resale?

When making an investment in a quality piece of jewelry, it is always reassuring to know that you can later resell it if you need money. Resale value is almost never as high as the original cost of jewelry, but it may still be possible to get a decent amount of money if you sell your jewelry to the right type of store. Generally, when jewelry is resold, its value is the cost of the assorted precious metals and gemstones, so aesthetic and sentimental value is normally ignored. Experienced jewelry and gold buyers know that the following types of items will typically generate the highest resale value.

Old, Large Gemstones

In general, most gemstones do not have a high resale value, but the rare exception to this rule is older, colorful gemstones. Most modern, colored gemstones that are unusually large are synthetically produced. Though there is no physical difference between lab grown and naturally mined gemstones, most collectors greatly prefer natural gemstones. Therefore, big gemstones that have good quality and color can be extremely rare and valuable. The most sought after of these natural gemstones are rubies, sapphires, and emeralds, and you can often get the best price by selling them to jewelers who will reset the quality stone in a modern setting.

Unfashionable Gold Jewelry

There is a lot of vintage jewelry from the 70s and 80s, such as the heavy gold chains worn by men, that has no stylistic value, so you can often pick it up for a cheap price. This jewelry can then be melted down and sold for the value of the gold. It typically ends up being worth more than it was originally bought for because gold has such a high price right now. Solid gold jewelry made from 24 karat gold has the highest value of course, but even 14 karat gold still fetches a high price. Though unfashionable gold jewelry has the highest resale value, almost any piece of jewelry containing any amount of gold will have a decent resale price at either a cash for gold store or a normal jewelry store.

Name Brand Jewelry

A name brand is typically the only factor that will increase resale value above the cost of the metal or gemstones. The resale value of two identical pieces of jewelry can vary wildly if one of them is a name brand piece. Respected, classic jewelers like Tiffany & Co will stamp their mark on jewelry to signify its quality, and this tiny stamp can make a huge difference. People are often willing to pay more for a piece if it is not just a generic jewelry item, and other brands which warrant a pricier resale value include Cartier, Piaget, and Swarovski.
